Thirsty for the Word: Matthew 7: 4-5
Jesus taught his followers with exaggeration and humor to help them clearly remember what they learned. His teaching here is that no one is perfect, so no one can judge his 'brother' hypocritically, self-righteously, untruthfully, superficially and harshly. We must first 'heal ourselves' of our own misconceptions before they can lovingly (without judgment) help others on their own spiritual paths. He makes the point vividly by creating the image of a speck of dust in one eye and an entire log in our own. I believe it's still a human tendency to see minor flaws in others more readily than we notice our own imperfections.
However, as Christians, we can be accused of being judgmental when we talk against sin. But opposing sin is not wrong. Holding the standard of righteousness naturally defines unrighteousness and draws the slings and arrows of those who choose sin over godliness. As Christians, we are warned against judging others unfairly or unrighteously, but Jesus commends “right judgment” (John 7:24, ESV).
We are to be discerning (Colossians 1:9; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). We are to practice church discipline (Matthew 18:15–17).We are to preach the whole counsel of God, including the Bible’s teaching on sin (Acts 20:27; 2 Timothy 4:2). We are to gently confront our brothers and sisters in Christ (Galatians 6:1). We are to speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15).
