Bible Vocab: ABIDE
To abide in Christ is to live in Him or remain in Him. When a person is saved, he/she is described as being "in Christ" (2 Cor 5:17). That person is held secure in a permanent relationship (John 10:28-29). So, abiding in Christ is not some special level of the Christian experience rather it's the position all true believers take.
1 John 2:5-6 teaches us abiding in Christ, where it's synonymous with knowing Christ and later in the chapter John equates remaining in the Father and the Son with the promise of eternal life. All of this ix in reference to salvation.
Abiding in Christ is having an intimate, close relationship with Him rather than a shallow, superficial one. In John 15:4-7, Jesus tells his disciples that drawing life from Him is essential, which is illustrated as us as the branches and Him as the vine. Without that vital union with Christ that salvation provides, there can be no life and no productivity for us. Colossians1:8 is another example of our essential union or relationship with Jesus to that of a body with a head.
It's best to interpret the True vine metaphor: Jesus is the true vine. The branches that abide in Him are truly saved -- real and vital connection to the Lord. The withered branches do not abide and are unsaved pretenders who had a fake attachment to the Vine and drew no life. For example, Peter and Judas seemed identical in their walk in Christ for awhile, but in the end Peter was attached to the Vine and Judas was not.
