Bible Vocab: Synagogue

A synagogue is similar to a modern church building. During the period of Israel being in Babylonian captivity, the Jewish temple was unavailable for worship, which required an alternative gathering place for dispersed Jews to gather for prayer and worship.

The synagogues had become a common local fixture by the time Jesus, his disciples and the New Testament period arrived. Synagogues was in connection with Jesus' ministry and the apostles. On the Sabbath, local Jews would meet for prayer and Scripture reading. Scrolls were read and are still found in synagogues. Also, teaching is done in the synagogues.

Paul and other apostles used synagogues as a meeting point for their missionary activities. Once Paul arrived into a new city or community, he would show up at the synagogue and request to speak. He would present Jesus as the Messiah and being his outreach. This resulted in many people believing in Jesus. However, at other times, Paul's teachings in the synagogues would lead to persecution.

Historically, the synagogue has continue to be an essential part of Judaism. And, served an an important fixture in Judaism and Christianity. It was a place where Jesus and the apostles to spread the gospel in the earliest years of the church.
